Love is Irony & Paradox.
Love can shrink and expand a world at once. One person becomes the center of your attention, imagination, appetite, and private mythology. You begin measuring days by the possibility of them.
You crave them in every breath, every thought, every minute. Body, mind, and soul seem to revolve around them like planets around a private sun. They become light. Air. Blood. Gravity that does not hold you down so much as pull you sideways into fantasy.
And somehow the feeling spills beyond them. You smile at strangers. Save moths from windowsills. Want to tell the trees you adore them. Everything feels sacred because something inside you has become incandescent. Have you ever watched love make an ordinary world suddenly look illuminated?
“My blood sings of you, and my veins map out ways to reach you.”

Why Love Feels Like Obsession
But let’s not be naive.
Passion can feel annihilating. Destructive. Fierce. Boundaryless in fantasy. It can unravel you stitch by stitch, move into every clean room of the mind, and set fire to things you once believed were entirely yours.
That does not mean destruction is proof of love. It means desire is capable of becoming so psychologically consuming that surrender can begin to masquerade as devotion.
Situations where you had a bomb in your hand, and you gave the trigger to someone else. Perhaps you have known the fantasy of handing someone the trigger. They could wound you. Leave. Ignore you. Choose you. And suddenly the mere possibility of their attention feels powerful enough to keep you waiting.
Willingly.
Smiling.
Begging them to press it. Because in that instant, you are sure that they are thinking of you…Even if it’s your destruction. The worst part is they don’t have to. The sheer possibility is enough to keep you there. To belong to your muse.

The Felt Architecture of Obsession
And yet…Obsession isn’t the word.
There is psychology beneath some of this fever. Researchers use terms such asย limerenceย for an involuntary state of intense romantic longing marked by persistent preoccupation, desire for reciprocation, and intrusive thoughts. It is not simply another name for all passionate love.
Recent research on impairing limerence found prolonged fixation, frequent intrusive thinking, and strong links with distress, while earlier relationship research distinguishes obsessive early-stage passion from forms of intense long-term love that can exist without continuous unwanted preoccupation.
But this is not a clinical essay, and I am not diagnosing the feeling described here. I am interested in its interior weather.
When obsession takes hold, attention becomes a ruthless curator. Their face appears in songs, cloud formations, ripples, shadows. The world begins arranging itself around the thing you cannot stop noticing.
Your own life can look suddenly gray beside the world they seem to open with a glance, a smirk, a gaze.
โIโm obsessedโ can feel hilariously insufficient. An understatement.
You ache. You wait. You bleed. You love.

When Passion Becomes Surrender
Is that foolishness or is that divinity?
Love can loosen the borders of the self. It can make another personโs joy, pain, safety, and existence matter to us with astonishing force. In its most intoxicated form, that can feel almost religious.
But devotion is not measured by how completely we ruin ourselves. Self-erasure is not evidence that love is purer, and surrendering autonomy does not make a bond sacred. There is a difference between allowing love to change you and making disappearance the price of being loved.
Maybe it is holy madness. In the fever dream of obsession, maybe it feels like holy madness. Love does not ask. It devours.
You wrap yourself in a gold foil, a glaze in your eyes, a smile that never leaves your lips. You hand yourself like a meal with a note that says, “Here, have me whole.”
Because when obsession reaches that pitch, it can feel as though:
You are no longer your own. You are a vessel, a flame, a chant that has echoed in someone else’s ribs. You feel holy and ridiculous at once, as though you have joined some ancient procession of lovers who mistook burning for revelation. Regal and foolish. Sacred in feeling, incomprehensible in proportion.
But god, what a way to burn.
What a way to be alive.
And still: being intensely alive is not the same thing as being safely loved.
A relationship does not become healthy because it produces extraordinary feeling. Reciprocity, consent, reliability, respect, and the preservation of both peopleโs autonomy belong to another test entirely.

Write to Your Muse: Is Romantic Obsession Love or Illusion?
Perhaps love has marked you. Perhaps obsession has. Perhaps some bewildering mixture of projection, longing, reciprocity, fantasy, and real affection has left its fingerprints everywhere.
The question is not only what it taught you. Ask what was actually happening.
Set the Ritual: A Letter to the Person You Could Not Stop Imagining
Set the ritual:
Pour something warm. Something that tastes like comfort. Sit somewhere you are not performing. Let the music that broke you once play softly.
Begin with:
“Dear Muse, I need to tell the truth about what belonged to you, what belonged to me, and what existed only in the world I built between us…”
Write the most honest version of love you have ever experienced- not the version you’ve made presentable. The version that devoured you. The version you would do again, knowing everything.
Then write:
“And what it taught me, that I am only now beginning to admit, isโฆ”
What to Do with the Letter
Keep it. Burn it. Read it to someone brave enough to receive it. Or simply seal it and write the date on the outside. Open it in a year.
Do not send it merely because writing it made the feeling feel urgent. The letter is first an instrument of seeing.
When love beckons to you, follow him,
Though his ways are hard and steep.โ
โKahlil Gibran, โOn Love,โย The Prophetย (1923)Perhaps you followed love. Perhaps longing. The letter may help you discover which.
